GEO 4984 / 5984 Remote Sensing and Phenology at Virginia Tech

Vegetation phenology studies the relation between climate and the timing of biological events such as budburst, leaf-out, and plant flowering. Phenology varies by species and is influenced by many factors, such as soil temperature, air temperature, solar illumination and day length.

In this course you will:

  • Become familiar with exciting satellites which provide a new image every day!
  • Learn the different definitions and terms of phenology and seasonality and become familiar with the appearance and development of phenology.
  • Learn about the phenology of plants and animals in different settings such as agriculture, higher latitudes, grasslands, and tropical dry climates.
  • Learn several methods for phenological observation with satellite imagery.
  • Go outside and learn how to recognize and record the phenology that surrounds us and link your findings with “real-time” satellite data!
